The following is a letter from this 34 year-old US Army Intelligence officer from Brooklyn, New York (name withheld for security). After his procedure with Dr. Kelly in the summer of 2002 to correct nearsightedness, he was deployed to Iraq where he quickly learned the benefits of the LASIK procedure. We wish him and those around him a safe return.
Dear Dr. Kelly,
I just wanted to let you know how critical it was that I had the Lasik procedure performed before deploying to Iraq.
When I first went into Iraq at the beginning of the war, no one knew what to expect. We encountered sporadic small arms fire, night attacks on our compound, and natural hazards such as sand and dust storms. It was under these conditions that we had to react very quickly at times, especially at night. I can’t imagine having to fumble for glasses in that situation or having to engage a threat with my previously poor vision. I could sleep comfortably knowing that if anything happened (which it did on numerous occasions), I’d be ready to handle it immediately
Prescription ballistic eyewear wasn’t quickly available when we left, and thanks to the Lasik procedure I was able to wear readily available non-prescription ballistic glasses, protecting my eyes from sand, dirt, and more importantly debris from explosions.
The Lasik procedure enabled me to be ready for whatever we encountered without having to think about it, as I had to all my life wearing contacts or glasses. Needless to say, I’ve been recommending the procedure to new guys heading over.
