Is the movie screen blurry? Or is it just me?
When I was about 20, I went to the movies and I couldn’t read the credits. I thought, why are they making them so blurry? That’s when I first realized that I couldn’t see well anymore.
Glasses just wouldn’t behave…
The glasses were a pain in the neck. Anytime it would rain I'd get rain spots and when I'd go into a hot room from a cold room, they’d get fogged up. When I would do sports or go to the gym and sweat, they’d fly off my face. And men don’t make passes at women with glasses. It’s easier to flirt without the glasses.
What’s this LASIK thing?
A close friend had the procedure, and that’s when I considered the laser surgery as an option. Actually, Megan had it, Cynthia had it, and Linda had it. Linda was one of the people who approached me and recommended that I have it done.
I was worried about the expense, and I’m definitely a paranoid person, so I was concerned about the safety. It took a little while until I decided on the surgery, but I’m the world biggest procrastinator, so I can find any reason not to do something. I became serious about the surgery after my friend Cynthia had it done.
Tears for fears...
I wondered what happens if something went wrong and the expense was also a concern. I did lots of research about the surgery. I’m a librarian, so that’s what I do, and I did article research and spoke to friends who are doctors and they recommended it. I looked for facts and statistics and I looked for information about my particular situation with Rosacea, and I looked to see if there were any side effects. And what most people don’t know with Rosacea is that it can go in the eyes and cause blindness, which is rare.
Dr. Wrong, Wrong, then Dr. Right!
I went to three doctors, my regular guy wasn’t a specialist. He was also pretty expensive. Then I went to Dr. Kelly and he spent an hour and a half with me. We talked about Rosacea and he was able to count the number of patients he had who had Rosacea. He just spent a lot of time with me. After that I went to see another doctor who is on the radio all the time, and I just didn’t get a good vibe. He wanted to do a different surgery that would involve contact lenses, and I felt he was two-faced and didn’t spend time with me. The more doctors I went to, the more I realized how much I liked Dr. Kelly. He was the one. So six months after my initial appointment, I called back to schedule the surgery. The staff was very nice.
Within minutes… and I could see!
The days before the surgery I was fine. Because I have Rosacea, I had to take an antibiotic before the surgery and that was it. And then I went right to the office. I had my two friends who also had the surgery come and meet me so they could take me home. They were right outside the door watching. It takes 10 minutes! It’s amazing! There's some discomfort because you feel pressure, but it's amazing how well you can see.
Better than I thought…
It's even better than I thought. The next morning I could see. My eyes just kept getting better and better with each passing day. I had to use drops for about two weeks but that didn’t stop me from doing anything.
It’s amazing. It was weird – I actually had peripheral vision. I wasn’t used to being able to see from the sides, so all of a sudden I was jumping a little. It was great because I noticed people noticing me. I wasn’t hiding behind the glasses any more so people were definitely noticing. Life’s just easier. I don’t hide behind my glasses, and I don’t have to worry about falling asleep with them on – it’s just easier.
Sending more patients Dr. Kelly’s way…
I recommended it to a woman from my office and it's funny – a woman called my work today and asked for some information about the procedure and I was like, “I know the perfect doctor. My doctor was great!” I sent her Dr. Kelly’s web site address.
